The PEP place universe is mostly incorporated municipalities. Source exceptions include Washington, D.C., consolidated-government balance records, and Urban Honolulu CDP in Hawaii. Urban Honolulu is a census-designated place, not an incorporated city. We preserve these entity labels and do not substitute county-wide or metropolitan totals. Other CDPs and minor civil divisions await separate coverage.
State directories and city boundaries
Each state directory lists the PEP places reported in the Census Bureau’s Vintage 2025 city population release. The place counts above describe the number of records in this site’s directory, not the number of all named communities in the state. Unincorporated communities and most census-designated places are not in this release. Counties, metropolitan areas and municipal subdivisions have different boundaries and are not interchangeable with these place records.
The District of Columbia is listed alongside the states as a separate jurisdiction. In states where some local governments are primarily represented as minor civil divisions, this PEP place directory does not describe every town or township. A place’s legal name is retained from the federal population file to help distinguish cities, towns and villages.
Within each state, population and annual growth can be searched and combined. Housing and income filters apply only to cities for which this release has a detailed survey profile. The full population directory is reusable through the state CSV files, including places too small to appear in common lists of major cities.
Population is an estimate for July 1, 2025, while annual change compares July 1, 2024 and July 1, 2025 within the same revised release. Those dates are separate from the 2020–2024 survey window used in the detailed city profiles. The difference matters when a fast-growing place has changed since survey responses were collected.
