Compare U.S. city population, housing costs and income
Compare the size of a place, the incomes of its households, the value of owner-occupied homes and the gross rent paid by renters. Each answers a different question. Rent includes contract rent and estimated tenant-paid utilities; home value comes from owners’ survey responses. Neither is a live market quote.

“Balance” identifies the part of a consolidated city remaining after separately incorporated municipalities are excluded. It does not mean the entire metropolitan area. Census geography definitions .
Start with the linked cities above, or browse profiles for every covered city, town and village in all 50 states and D.C. Housing, demographics, resident industries and occupations, and commuting use the same national ACS release. Read the population history alongside the survey uncertainty before comparing places.
The national directory goes further for population research: combine state, city size and annual growth, then download the matching rows. Housing filters use nationwide survey records wherever a compatible estimate is published; missing values are identified.

City boundaries, metropolitan areas and data coverage
A city is an administrative place. Its surrounding county and metropolitan area can have different incomes, populations and housing costs. This release uses place-level Census statistics and labels every reference period. County and metro labels provide surrounding geographic context, and nearby NOAA station normals describe historical climate. Regional price indexes, school assignments and broadband statistics need separately verified coverage.
For a move, use citywide estimates to form questions about a specific address: lease costs, commute routes, school assignment and service availability need more local checks. For research, use the downloads and data dictionary to preserve dates and definitions.
