Editorial policy
How city statistics are selected, interpreted, attributed, corrected and kept separate from opinion.
Original records and clear attribution
US Cities Info prioritizes original federal and local sources. This first release uses Census PEP population estimates, ACS five-year survey tables, the Census Gazetteer and cartographic boundaries. Competitor websites are product references for useful reader tasks, rather than data suppliers or material to copy. We do not republish their reviews, scores, text or maps.
Every statistic must have a geographic identifier, reference period, source and version. Available uncertainty accompanies survey values. A derived figure states its transformation. Source links allow a reader to inspect the original table; downloadable observations preserve metadata needed for independent reuse.
What a summary may conclude
Summaries explain observable population change, survey medians, household composition and resident travel patterns. They can identify differences between selected places using the same measure. They cannot infer a neighborhood’s character from a citywide average or infer an individual’s experience from demographic categories. A median does not describe everyone.
We do not invent interviews, quotations, author qualifications, firsthand experiences, employer lists or testimonials. Race, Hispanic origin, language and other demographic characteristics are presented with source definitions and are never used to create safety or suitability scores. Statistical rankings state their universe and thresholds instead of claiming an overall best place to live.
Geography, uncertainty and missing values
City, county, metropolitan area, ZIP code and ZCTA are distinct. A regional measure may appear only with its own geographic coverage clearly labeled. The current release does not assign regional prices, climate risk, school quality or connectivity to individual homes. Missing, suppressed and inapplicable values are identified rather than replaced with zero.
ACS margins of error are reported at the source’s 90% confidence level. Aggregated values and percentage margins use documented approximations. Point-estimate comparisons are not significance tests. Large uncertainty is visible so a reader can weigh the precision of a claim.
Corrections and source updates
Reader reports are checked against retained source rows, definitions and periods. A material correction updates all affected representations: profile prose, tables, chart, comparison, rankings and downloads. The updates log records the change. New data years are published only after a new source release has been imported and validated.
Advertising and analytics are inactive in this release. Commercial ratings would require permission and separate attribution before use. Resident opinions, if added later, will be identified separately from statistics with dates, response counts and moderation; voluntary responses will not be described as representative of all residents.
